Nobel Laurette, Prof. Wole Soyinka has renounced the invite being propagated by the Association of Nigerian Authors, Ogun (ANA) to its Dinner/Award Night.
It would be recalled that Soyinka among other dignitaries such as Prof. Femi Osofisan were said to have been confirmed guests for the Dinner/Award Night of the association slated to hold at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta on 6th February, 2021.
In a vexed statement released by Soyinka, he revealed that he never consented to any invite to the event and he is utterly disappointed that an association filled with creative minds would deem it fit to confirm his attendance when he never consented to one.
He asked to be detached from any future projects, attributions and claims coming from ANA, adding that he hopes he won’t have to engage the court to enforce this request of his.
He said, “A member of ANA advisory board and I interacted nearly a fortnight ago and I thought this was all straightened out definitively. Now enters this notification by a state chapter to an event in my honour. I consider it manipulative.
“For now, kindly use all ANA channels to make members understand that I am no party to this event. I never gave my consent to it and thoroughly resent the insertion of my person into a very murky situation. As a matter of elementary courtesy, I would have thought that one’s personal consent would be sought before being advertised as recipient of any honours anywhere in the world. This is basic usage in any culture of mutual respect and under any circumstances. I am astonished that an association of creative minds would consider flouting such norms, even for one second. As the Nigerian saying goes, you do not try to shave a man’s head in his absence – simple.”
His words, “What kind of joke is this? You put out my name as your RSVP without my prior consent? Please remove my name henceforth from your notices and don’t associate me with the event.”
In his reaction, Chairman, ANA Ogun, Paul Oni claimed that they got Soyinka’s approval in a letter through his PA, assuring that “there is no need to be scared, we are visiting Soyinka soon”.
