TRACE, Ogun State, has confirmed that three people were burnt to death and six injured, as a fuel tanker exploded near Central Bank of Nigeria building and GTB Bank in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.

According to TRACDE PRO, Babatunde Akinbiyi, “we cannot confirm how many men or women lost their lives at the scene of the accident”.

He disclosed that “six cars and the tanker itself were burnt. Six motor cycles were also burnt”.

According to eyewitness account, explosion was heard around 9: am, along the IBB Boulevard, Kuto; where CBN and GT Bank are located and people within the area fled for safety.

Akinbiyi stated that the injured are currently being hospitalized at FMC, Idi-Aba and General Hospital, Ijaye.

Speaking on the cause of the accident he revealed that, it was a break failure and the articulated tanker vehicle should not have taken the overhead bridge at Kuto, adding that, there is a need for public enlightenment for such tanker drivers, especially with obsolete vehicles with wear and tear.

Asked if TRACE operatives will be posted near the over-head bridge to prevent another occurrence, he said; “if they come, they may be jittery what they need is attitudinal appeal and behavioural motivation”.
