Is it true that the strike has been called off?

Yes, that is the true position; the strike action has been called off.

Did they agree with your demands?

Yes, we were able to reach consensus in major issues, so we will just move forward.

Specifically on which areas?

On the new minimum wage for instance, August/September initially, but we were able to agree on October for the new minimum wage

What about the pensions and gratuities?

For the gratuities, we agreed that a sum of N500million is set aside to address the issue of outstanding gratuities starting from January 2021.

What other areas?

The outstanding promotions for 2016, 2019 and 2020 process will commence immediately.

Govt. stated that your action was premature. Were you able to tackle that?

All that is just navigating the turbulent sea, but we were able to get to our destination.

Did you meet with the Governor? Was he in town or not?

What we were told was that he was out of town.

Were you happy that he wasn’t on ground while you are negotiating on sensitive issue?

Frankly, we would have loved to have an interaction with the Governor, but there is nothing we can do since he is out of town

Did you have a written agreement with them now?

Definitely, we have a written agreement now and the MOU have been signed by organized labour and the state government.

In his reaction, the secretary to the state government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi noted that both sides have their constraints and must look out for the interest of their constituency.

He added that they recognized the legitimacy of the demand of the labour union, says that they are very happy that they have their own differences.

According to him “the whole idea is not to resolve all the differences at once, but we have gotten to a point where we feel that the differences have been resolved, so that our lives can go on”, he explained.
