Three days after Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the suspension of the N3,700 Parent-Teacher Association levy, some public schools in the state on Monday allegedly collected some money from new pupils.
According to Punch Newspaper correspondent, Iyesi High School, Ota; Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba; African Church Grammar School, Ita-Iyalode; and Adiyan Community Primary School, Ifo, were among the schools that allegedly ignored the order.
Parents, who took their children to the schools for enrolment were said to have been asked to pay N10,500 for each child as registration fee which they said, it included tuition and PTA fee.
A parent told our correspondent that some officials of the schools threatened them not to disclose the amount of money they collected from them so as to avoid being dealt with.
Both public and private schools in the state resumed on Monday after over a month holiday.
However, our correspondent learnt that Lafenwa High School, Oke-Ona High School, Akomoje; Unity High School, Ago-Ika; and Premier Grammar School obeyed the state government’s directive and didn’t collect any levy from pupils.
Also, African Church Grammar School, Ita-Iyalode, reportedly collected N2,700 for the purchase of textbooks for each pupil.
Our correspondent learnt that Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, admitted over 1,508 pupils.
A source within the school told our correspondent that the officials allegedly ordered parents who wanted to enroll their children to pay N4,700 for a male pupil and N5,200 for a female pupil before they could be registered.
Our correspondent, who visited the school, saw many parents in a long queue with their receipts trying to register their children.
But the state government condemned the collection of levies in public schools.
It said it had not authorized any principals to sell uniforms to new or old pupils.
Speaking on a radio programme, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kunle Somorin, advised parents and guardians to report erring principals to the Ministry of Education.
